My name is Christina Stein. I started writing this blog while I was a German transplant to Seattle, WA and I quickly discovered how much fun it is. I grew up in the Stuttgart region (Schwaben) of Germany and moved to Seattle with my husband Brian and our three children in 2009. Cooking is a great passion of mine and making German food and writing about my recipes makes me feel connected to my heritage and to my community - my family and friends in Germany as well as in America. I am not a professionally trained chef, I am not even a professional trained writer, but I love to make things well and I am learning every day. Like how to make a perfect Apfelstrudel from my Aunt Helga or making Sauerkraut like my Oma did – but then trying to adapt that method into something we all could possibly do. I am inspired by people’s wonderful ideas every day. I get obsessed in my “test-kitchen” and I am lucky to have a handful of hungry in-house critics to set me straight.
Butterbrot is the core of simple goodness to me - butter on bread. A crusty loaf of fresh bread paired with pure, velvety butter. To me that’s the basis of happy comfort. I come from the land of bread! And if you ever travel to Germany you will know what I mean. There is no such thing as too many bakers making amazing bread!
